Customer Reviews: Average Rating:
Rating : - Fabulous purchase We got this GPS system for use on a three-week car trip through Scandinavia. We've navigated through Europe before using maps and written or verbal directions. What an improvement! The reduction in navigator-driver (read: marital) tension alone was well worth the price (which was a bargain on Amazon).
We had no problem picking up satellites wherever we were. We could even get them in our hotel rooms most of the time so we could plan out how long a particular trip would take. The unit doesn't like being in tunnels for too long, though, so be sure to look for your next turn before entering the tunnel so you'll know where you need to go when you exit. Navigation was clear and maps excellent. The maps seemed up to date except for roads that had visibly just been moved within the last several weeks. Even on the remotest dirt roads in the woods (which looked and rode more like cow paths through some farmer's backyard), navigation was spot on. Directions for Europe's ubiquitous roundabouts were accurate and easy to understand. Recalculation speed is exceedingly fast. Battery life is good. Travel time estimates are accurate.
Being able to switch to kilometers while in Europe and then back to miles in the U.S. was helpful. A particularly nice feature was the warning about speed cameras -- which we didn't even know existed unit the unit started beeping and flashing red. The unit picked up the cameras and showed us the speed limits before we came upon the cautionary road signs. Another helpful feature was being able to simulate the entire route before heading out on the road either walking or driving. We also liked being able to set route preferences such as "avoid ferries".
We gave the Garmin nuvi 270 quite a workout in Scandinavia and have used it quite a bit since, and thoroughly like it. I'd buy this one again in a heartbeat, especially for the price.
